Accessibility and voice: utility help everyone can use
Utility bills, program applications and outage notices can be hard to read and harder to act on. Accessibility is a core part of Wattie's mission: Wattie is being designed as an accessibility-first, conversational home-energy assistant that helps more people understand their utilities and take the next step.
Who Wattie is being designed to help
- People who are blind or have low vision.
- People with mobility limitations or difficulty using touchscreens.
- People with reading difficulties, or who benefit from simplified explanations.
- Older adults.
- People who prefer or benefit from voice interaction.
- People who use screen readers or other assistive technology.
Ask Wattie by text or voice
You can Ask Wattie questions in your own words by typing. Wattie Voice is an accessibility-focused feature that lets you speak your question and hear spoken responses where it's available in the app. Voice features continue to evolve; we only describe a capability as available once it's ready.
Accessibility practices we follow
We're continually improving accessibility and do not claim a specific accessibility certification.
- Clear, plain-language explanations of complicated utility information.
- Accessible labels and structure for screen readers.
- Keyboard accessibility on this website where available.
- Large, easy-to-reach touch targets.
- Reduced-motion support for people sensitive to animation.
Multilingual access
Wattie is being prepared for English, Spanish, Arabic, Persian, Vietnamese, Filipino/Tagalog, Simplified Chinese/Mandarin and Korean. Language availability — especially for voice — may differ, and some languages are still being completed and tested.
Medical and disability-related utility programs
Some utilities or jurisdictions offer programs for households with qualifying medical or disability-related energy needs. In California, Medical Baseline is one example. Similar programs aren't available everywhere — check with your own utility and state.
